"In 2019, I decided to stop touring as a session bass player and spend more time at home and in the studio working on my own music. For the last year, this has been a perfect balance. I feel very happy having time to write music, socialise with friends and have time with family. Initially I wrote the songs and uploaded them to my YouTube and Facebook page, that was all I had in mind for them. This went on for most of the lockdown of 2020. Then I realised I had enough songs for an album. But the songs kept coming, I was on a roll."

Medicine

The really good thing about song writing is that you can get all kinds of emotions off your chest just by writing about it. If something pleases you, you can write about it. It’s the same for something that causes pain and upset. Medicine is about an upset. I wrote this as the tables turned on a stressful situation. The lesson is, always use your common sense when reacting to a situation, never react with ego, anger or stupidity.

This song came about after a discussion with my wife about how we met and how
things have changed with the coming of the internet and social media.
I could allow my imagination to run riot with this as a theme.

For any relationship to last, it needs love, from both sides. Being happy together and showing how much you care is so important. We all need to feel loved, and our partner is the one we look to for reassurance. There are many ways to show how much you care, and it’s easy when you love each other.

Life on the road is very different from home life. It’s nice to get home and back to the things
you miss while being on the road. This song is about the contentment of a happy home life,
and being with the one you care for most of all.

Not my song but I totally get it. Eric Van Den Brink wrote the tune and Babette Van Veen
wrote the words. This song could so easily have been a Pilot song.
I love it all, the lyrics, the playing, the backing vocals and the production.

I don’t know what this song is about. It seems to work with the lockdown but it was written long before that came along. I don’t have a lot to say about this apart from the McCartney influence. That sounds pretty evident to me.

Ver el Mundo Pasar

I wrote this song to express how I feel about the way my life has been and how it is now. It’s another song that just appeared as I was thinking about the past and the future. The Spanish verse seemed obvious to me because of the character of the song. Many thanks to Maria Turner-Ramos for the translation. Watch the world go by.

Beautiful Thing

I really liked this song when my friend Martin Wykes played it to me and asked me to sing it. He said he had me in mind when he wrote it. I found it really easy to sing this song and I liked the way he’d put it together. There are obvious influences, but that’s great, it works on this album and I was happy to include it. We requested Facebook friends to send us photos of beautiful things for a video we planned to make. That video is now available for all to see. Many thanks to all who sent in their photos.

Love Song

My daughter Sadie has a lovely voice. I wanted her to sing ‘If I could change your mind’ which features on my album ‘The Traveller’. It originally featured on an Alan Parsons Project album sung by Leslie Duncan. I wasn’t sure if Sadie’s voice would suit that style. Then I realised that Leslie Duncan had written ‘Love song’. We recorded her vocal in under an hour, it was a breeze for Sadie. I recorded 3 takes but ended up using the first take. Yes, I’m a proud pop.

Spanish Soul (Instrumental)

I’ve written a few Spanish sounding songs in my time; I think my guide is a Spaniard. I’d purchased a new piece of software and was browsing through some of the sounds. The intro to this song is one of the sounds I liked from this new piece of software. I recorded the sound and started adding to the arrangement. Before long I had a complete tune with a Spanish theme. The Spanish guitar was the last thing to be recorded.

I wrote this song in the 1990s when I was recording the album Fragments with Jon Turner producing. It wasn’t suitable for that album and I thought I’d save it for another project. I forgot all about it until Jon came to visit me in 2019 and jogged my memory. He did a great job of the production and I just thought that this song would sit nicely in this album.

This song was going to be about the breakup of a relationship and the guy trying to deal with it. I’d made a start on the song when my mother passed away. I couldn’t stop thinking about her while trying to continue with my writing. I know she was with me while I finished the lyrics. She had Alzheimer’s but she always knew me when I visited. I’d stand in the doorway to her room and say ‘hello’. I still hear her saying ‘aw, it’s ma laddie’.
